چکیده

Studies were conducted to assess (a) the pH and motility of semen removed from the ductus (d.) deferens and receptaculum from males sexually rested 1 wk, (b) the pH, motility, and sperm concentration of semen after each successive ejaculation (ejaculated 3 or 5 times at 30-60 min intervals) and (c) the rate of semen replenishment and the fertility of the replenished semen after emptying the d. deferens by repeated ejaculations. In both Large and Small White turkeys, the pH of the semen decreased progressively from the proximal segment of the d. deferens to the receptaculum. Sperm from all segments of the d. deferens were motile. With multiple ejaculations, the pH of successive ejaculates increased. Sperm concentration in the first and second ejaculates were the same, but the concentration in the third ejaculate was reduced. After 5 successive ejaculations 0.08 ml (12 p. 100 of the total volume of the 5 ejaculations) remained in the d. deferens. After the 5 successive ejaculations the semen volume in the d. deferens was replenished between 4 and 5 days and the total sperm number was replenished within 3 days. Before ejaculation the fertility of semen from the proximal and distal d. deferens was equal to the fertility of the first ejaculate. After multiple ejaculations, the fertility of the third ejaculate was slightly less than the fertility of the first ejaculate. The fertility of semen collected from d. deferens 24 hr after multiple ejaculations was lower in the first of 2 fertility trials, but was not reduced in the 2nd trial. However, in both trials the fertility of semen collected from the d. deferens 72 hrs after 5 successive ejaculations, was the same as fertility of the first ejaculate.

Differences between first and second ejaculations regarding seminal plasma calcium, magnesium and total antioxidant capacity in dual-purpose Fleckvieh bulls and their relationships with semen quality

Artificial insemination is a well-established and widely used method for genetic improvement in cattle breeding industry. Recently, researchers have shown an increased interest in the cryoprotective effects of minerals and antioxidants on semen. Previous studies on calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg), two main macro-minerals, have mainly investigated their roles in mammalian spermatogenesis and fer...

P-142: Effects of A Synthetic Antioxidant (4-Hydroxy Tempo) Additive to The Semen Extender on the Ejaculated Spermatozoa Characteristics before and after Freezing in Water Buffaloes (Bubalus Bubalis)

Background: Semen cryopreservation is the most important section of artificial insemination programs; it allows preservation of semen fertility for a long time. Materials and Methods: The aim of the present study was to detect the effect of in vitro supplementation of 4-hydroxy Tempo on fresh and frozen spermatozoa quality of buffalo bulls. Five healthy buffalo bulls (5 ejaculates from each bul...

Effects of in vitro copper sulphate supplementation on the ejaculated sperm characteristics in water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis)

This study was carried out to investigate effects of copper sulphate (CuSO4) additive to semen extenders on sperm parameters: progressive motility, viability, membrane integrity and DNA damage, after semen dilution and cryopreservation. Semen samples of 5 buffalo bulls of 3-5 years old were collected at 5 different occasions during the autumn 2011. A total number of 25 samples were u...

Isolation and prevalence of Campylobacter in the reproductive tracts and semen of commercial turkeys.

Campylobacter is one of the most commonly reported bacterial causes of human foodborne infections in the United States, and epidemiologic evidence indicates that a significant proportion of human infections result from the improper preparation of poultry products. Campylobacter frequently colonizes the avian intestinal tract, but recent research indicates that this organism can also colonize th...

P-143: Effects of In Vitro Copper Supplementation on The Ejaculated Semen Parameters in Water Buffaloes (Bubalus Bubalis)

Background: A number of studies have demonstrated membrane lipid peroxidation (LPO) as one of the causes of defective sperm function in liquid semen preserved at 4◦C and cryopreserved semen. Some attempt has been made to preserve sperm parameters, particularly sperm motility, by adding some elements and Materials to the semen before freezing. Materials and Methods: To investigate effects of cop...
